Project DESCRIPTION:

The complete refurbishment of Edmund Barton Building in Canberra revitalised the commercial life of this architecturally significant building and restored part of the original civic vision for its public spaces. The design provided larger contemporary office areas, childcare facilities, a gym and a cafe; and incorporated improved wayfinding, as well as operational and maintenance efficiencies.

The use of the building by the AFP added a layer of security considerations for the project that concerned not only the ground floor perimeter works and circulation but also the treatment of the facade. The approach taken to minimised the visual impact of control measures and integrated these into the landscaping.

The building achieved a 5 Star Green Star ‘As built’ base building rating, which added an additional layer of accountability both in the implementation of the design and in the administration for the building contractor.
