amaroo PRIMARY school extension

Location: AMAROO, A.C.T

CLIENT: DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

project description:

This extension to the library building provided six new classrooms to replace temporary accommodation; and a central multi use area adjacent to the classrooms, for increased library facilities and e-learning space. The design extruded the main volume of the library building with new lower roofs for the classrooms on both sides and an elevated higher roof over the central space. Additional elements included kitchenette, store room, disabled toilet and a playground sun shading structure.

The building form was designed to achieve passive energy efficiency with controlled solar performance, increased levels of insulation and an automated mechanical ventilation system to maximise fresh air and make best use of the climate and thermal mass of the structure. The a night purge system cools the structure overnight in summer and controls the ventilation during the day, all of which achieve a high quality environmentally sustainable facility. Automated mechanical ventilation rather than automated windows considerably reduced operating cost and ongoing maintenance issues associated with window actuators.
