Australian American Memorial Refurbishment

LOCATION: RUSSELL, A.C.T

BUDGET: $1.2 million

CLIENT: national capital authority

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The refurbishment of the Australian American Memorial constituted an opportunity to apply a high level of detailed design and technical knowledge to a heritage listed landmark in Canberra.

The project addressed; disabled access needs through the design of the commemorative area and front ring; the replacement of the sandstone plinth and pavers around the tower, stair treads and forecourt; the replacement of the water reflection pool surrounding the base of the tower; and internal repair works to the 73 m tower shaft.

The refurbishment of the monument recreated the existing structure that had a plinth with stairs around the entirety of the tower base. To create a place where tributes could be laid by all a new commemorative front ring was designed and installed with the stair.
